Welcome to LeanSails

You order your sails by entering your measurements directly into our calculator. Our goal is to offer the absolutely lowest prices because you handle the measurement yourself. Our sailmaking workshop is run by some of the most skilled sailmakers in the country, and we have a wide presence across Denmark beyond our loft in Helsingør. Contact us here if you have any questions or would like help with your measurements.

As easy as 1-2-3.

1: Configure and calculate price.

Calculate the price of your new sail using the calculator on our website. Once you’ve chosen the fabric and details you want, submit your order by clicking “Order” at the bottom of the page. On the next page, you’ll be asked to choose how you want the measurements to be done. You have three options:

  • I’ll do it myself—with help from LeanSails’ clear measurement materials
  • I’ll measure myself, with virtual assistance from a LeanSails designer
  • I’ll let LeanSails handle the measurements “Limited to certain areas.”

    2: Measurement

After you order your sails, you’ll receive an order confirmation email by the next business day at the latest. If you chose to measure yourself, you’ll receive the materials needed for the measurements along with the confirmation.

Pick a day with calm weather, and bring tape measure and folding ruler to the marina. We’ll explain which measurements to take and which tools to use.If you chose virtual assistance from LeanSails, we’ll schedule a time to measure together—with your sail designer on FaceTime, Skype, or another platform. You hold the tape measure while the sail designer records the measurements and provides guidance throughout.

    3: Design and production

Measurements are now in place and we can begin designing your sail. Our in-house sail designer is well-acquainted with the boats and weather conditions we sail under in tour area.

Once the sail design is complete, it will be sent to production—either at our own sail loft or one of our international partners.

Regardless of the production location, the finished sail will be sent to our sail loft for inspection. There, our skilled sailmakers review it before sending it to you.

    Sails

Here you can choose which type of sail you want to calculate. Once you’ve filled in the specifications for a sail and added it to your quote, you can calculate another sail by selecting a sail type here and repeating the process. You can add as many sails to the quote as you like. You can also edit the specifications of any sail in your quote at any time by clicking ‘Edit’ next to each sail.

    Dimensioner

To calculate a price for your sails, we need some measurements. If you already have the final measurements for your new sails, that’s perfect — but if not, you can still get a price estimate based on what you believe the measurements are. If you decide to send us a request for an order, we will adjust the measurements together to ensure everything fits your boat. We will also adjust the price so you only pay for what is actually delivered.

    sailCloth and layout

Crosscut and radial are two different ways of cutting the sail panels. A crosscut sail has horizontal panels, while a radial sail has triangular panels arranged like a fan from each corner. Crosscut is the simplest to produce and therefore cheaper than radial, but the advantage of radial is that the sail will keep its shape for a longer time. Once you’ve chosen a layout, you’ll be recommended a sailcloth based on the dimensions you provided above, but you can adjust the cloth weight at any time if it doesn’t fully match your preferences.

    Battens, slides and reefs

If you’ve selected the mainsail type, you can now choose between several different details for your sail. The first thing we ask for is which battens you prefer. Full-length battens help the mainsail maintain its shape for a longer time, and if you want battens that further support the sail’s profile, you should choose tapered battens. You’ll also need to select the type of sliders you want on the luff, as well as how many reef points you require. If you’re unsure, you can always change your selections during the order process, and we’re happy to offer advice and guidance.

    Additional options

Measurement for racing includes the small blue button required for racing in Denmark and Germany. This option is only relevant for racing sailors. If you choose measurement for racing, we will install the button for Denmark and Germany, and report the measurements directly to the Danish Websejler in agreement with you.

For mainsails, you can choose to have the leech line led over the top of the sail and down along the luff. This allows you to adjust the leech line even when the boom is raised so high that you can’t reach it, and also when the sail is eased and the boom is out to the side.

For a furling genoa, you can choose whether you want UV protection on the leech and foot, as well as whether foam should be added to the luff to improve furling performance. If you don’t put a cover on your genoa every time you finish sailing, UV protection is highly recommended.

        Step 2: measurements

When we produce your new sails, we need a set of measurements. You can take the measurements yourself, or you can get help from us. If you choose to measure the boat on your own, here are some tips to help you do it in the best possible way.
